A new chapter in Nepal’s tourism safety has begun with the establishment of Himalayan Guardian Nepal (HGN), a company founded by the former CEO of Nepal Tourism Board, Dr. Dhananjay Regmi.
The company has introduced an innovative and globally affordable insurance solution designed exclusively for foreign nationals visiting
Nepal—whether for cultural tours, adventurous treks, or high-altitude expeditions.
Unlike conventional travel insurance, which often forces tourists to purchase expensive policies in their home countries, HGN provides a Nepal-based insurance package at the lowest cost available worldwide. What makes this initiative even more groundbreaking is the integration of modern technology into the insurance system.
Each policyholder is equipped with a satellite-connected device, ensuring uninterrupted communication even in the remotest Himalayan terrains.
HGN has designed its policies in three different categories to suit the diverse needs of travelers. For cultural and leisure tours, where visitors travel up to 3,500 meters by bus, jeep, car, or motorbike, a 14-day policy is available at just $16 per person. For trekking enthusiasts heading up to 5,500 meters, a 14-day insurance package
is offered at $150 per person per trip. For those attempting to climb peaks up to 6,000 meters, a special insurance policy is available at $500 per person, valid for 60 days to accommodate the acclimatization and longer climbing duration.
These insurance packages can be purchased through any registered trekking or tour agency in Nepal, since the Government of Nepal has made the involvement of licensed guides and agencies mandatory for trekking and climbing activities. Travelers can therefore rely on their trekking or tour operators to secure the policy on their behalf.
On top of the official insurance fee, the agency may add a 10–15% service charge, as they are required to make advance payments for the policy on behalf of the travelers before collecting the money from them.
The device itself is simple yet powerful. It includes an SOS button that acts as a lifeline during emergencies. With just one push, the insured traveler can instantly connect to the HGN platform, which is linked to Nepal-based insurance companies, rescue operators, and medical teams. Depending on the nature of the emergency, the system dispatches helicopters, Sherpa guides, or doctors to the exact location of the traveler.
This immediate response mechanism ensures that safety is never compromised, regardless of weather conditions, terrain, or altitude.
The launch of Himalayan Guardian Nepal reflects a vision that prioritizes safety while promoting Nepal as a reliable and secure destination for international travelers. By blending affordability with advanced rescue technology, HGN not only fills a critical gap in tourism safety but also enhances Nepal’s image as a world
leader in responsible adventure tourism.
It is also assumed that after introducing this device-based insurance policy, fake rescues and over-billing practices in hospitals will come to a complete stop—helping to restore trust and further improve the global image of Nepal’s tourism industry.
